Northeastern Madagascar Agricultural Fires (December 16, 2011)

Dozens of fires (red) were burning in eastern Madagascar on December 14, 2011 at 07:00 UTC (2 a.m. EST). The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this natural-color image. Smoke is light-brown in this NASA satellite image, while fires are designated by a red dot. As much as a third of Madagascar burns annually, according to Wild, as farmers set fires to clear land for agriculture and pasture. Usually fires are known to spread into adjacent wildlands.
